History is usually written by those in power, and they leave behind records like copper plates, stone carvings, and documents. Because of this, we often don’t get to know the stories of poor and marginalized people. But their history and fight for justice have lived on through songs that were passed down by word of mouth. These songs have helped spread the ideas of social reform to the common people, even if they couldn’t read or write. From Jyotirao Phule to today, such songs have played a big role in creating awareness and inspiring change. These are what we call Bhim Geet.
People think that Bhim Geet are only songs about Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, and that’s true to some extent. But here, we are trying to expand the definition of Bhim Geet. Bhim Geet are not just songs about Dr. Ambedkar, but also songs that talk about social justice, change, and revolution. They can be about anyone who worked to bring positive change in society—like Gautam Buddha, Sant Kabir, Sant Tukaram, Krantiba Jyotiba Phule, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mata Savitribai Phule, Mata Jijau, Mata Ramai, Maa Fatima Shaikh, Mata Ahilyabai Holkar, Periyar, and Anna Bhau Sathe.
www.bheemgeet.com is the world’s first and only platform dedicated to Bhim Geet. Our goal is to collect all types of Bhim Geet from around the world in one place—including Qawwali, Bharud, Ovya, Palna, Kavita, Powade, Rap, and even songs of Afro-American struggles. For the past four years, we’ve been working to build something meaningful. We realized there are many Bhim Geet out there, but they’re scattered and not saved digitally. That’s why, through the Ambedkar Lab Initiative, we relaunched bheemgeet.com on April 4th, 2023.
