Narasimha Gatha (नरसिंह गाथा)

Narasimha Gatha is a sacred Buddhist chant in the Pali language that praises the divine qualities of the Buddha, portraying him as “The Lion Among Men.” Sung beautifully by Pawa, this hymn describes the Buddha’s noble appearance, his deep wisdom, and his boundless compassion for all beings. Each verse paints a picture of his majestic presence—his radiant golden skin, his kind and peaceful eyes, and his powerful yet gentle aura.

The Story Behind the Chant

As the Buddha returned to Kapilavastu after attaining enlightenment, his son Rahula saw him for the first time. Curious and unaware of his father’s true greatness, Rahula turned to his mother, Princess Yasodhara, and asked,

“Mother, I see many monks approaching us, all radiating wisdom and peace. How will I know which one is my father?”

With a gentle smile, Princess Yasodhara pointed to the Buddha, whose presence shone like the moon in the night sky, and softly said,

“Look there, my son. He is your father, the Lion Among Men.”

She then began to describe the extraordinary features of the Buddha—the marks of a great being. She spoke of his graceful walk, his serene face, his deep, soothing voice, and the sacred signs on his feet that symbolized his divine path. She explained how he once lived as a prince in luxury but left it all behind to seek the truth for the benefit of all living beings.

As Rahula listened, his heart filled with awe and admiration. He bowed deeply and whispered,

“Now I understand. He is not just my father—he is the guide and protector of the entire world.”

A Timeless Message of Wisdom and Devotion

Through this profound chant, devotees are reminded of the Buddha’s greatness—his wisdom, kindness, and ultimate sacrifice. Narsingh Gatha is not just a song; it is a spiritual journey that encourages all to follow the path of the Buddha, the true Lion Among Men.

अञ्जन वण्ण सुनील सुक्सो

गच्छति नीलपथे विय चन्दो
तारगण परिवेठित रूपो
